Two choirs, a community, one afternoon and a shared language that needs no words.

On Saturday 22 August, the L'Okapi Community comes together with two choirs from the Euregion: Ghanni Maastricht and Les Perles Noires from Liège. Together with everyone who feels like joining, we spend an afternoon exploring voice, breath, presence and collective improvisation.

No sheet music. No auditions. Just listening as the foundation.

What we do We begin with a vocal and body warm-up then we sing in the circle: improvising without notes, letting the sound emerge from what happens around us. Next, each choir teaches the other a song from its own repertoire. Those songs are performed live that same evening on the terrace, opening the festival programme.

After the workshop, we all sit down together for a community dinner.

Facilitator Charlotte Haesen, singer-songwriter, vocal coach and founder of L'Okapi Productions. She developed a methodology for experience-based workshops, grounded in Expressive Arts Therapy, positive psychology and peer-to-peer facilitation.

Elisabeth Bonmariage, conductor of Les Perles Noires since 2013 and music teacher. Her direction is built on mutual listening and musical precision, creating a space where every voice counts.

What happens when two choirs that have never met get a single afternoon to make something together?

At 18:00, you find out.

Ghanni Maastricht and Les Perles Noires from Liège open the Saturday evening of Jazz au Broukay with three songs. One from Ghanni's repertoire. One from that of Les Perles Noires. And one they learned together that very afternoon, guided by Charlotte Haesen.

So what you hear is not a programme rehearsed over months. It is what emerges when people from two cities, two languages and two musical traditions decide to listen to one another.

Improvisation, collective singing, and the power of voices finding each other for the first time.

Who

Ghanni Maastricht, a collective of singers who use music as a language of connection and hope. Regular visitors and participants at L'Okapi Productions.

Les Perles Noires, a choir of some thirty voices from Beyne-Heusay that has performed and explored polyphonic music since 2013, under the direction of Elisabeth Bonmariage.

Verhalen van mensen over hun mentale gezondheid blijven veelal in de taboesfeer. Deze theatervoorstelling is een samenstelling van persoonlijke levensverhalen. Geen gespeelde rollen, maar mensen die hun waargebeurde ervaringen met je delen; ervaringen van pijn, verdriet, geluk en vreugde. 

Bijzondere verhalen van bijzondere mensen; ze geven een inkijkje in hun persoonlijke thema’s, maar houden ons ook een spiegel voor over maatschappelijke thema’s zoals eenzaamheid, kwetsbaarheid en de zoektocht naar jezelf kunnen zijn. De verhalen worden in artistieke vormen gepresenteerd. Denk hierbij aan een verhaal, een lied, muziek, toneel, gedicht.

Ditmaal zijn het de verhalen van Chantal Horsmans, Arachon Besseling, Kimberley Pisters, Tim Gladdines en Joanne Vertommen.

During the Community Concert, the L'Okapi community brings music, words and personal stories together in an intimate evening full of connection. From different backgrounds and experiences, they take you into what moves, touches and inspires them.

Expect an evening that comes close: honest, open and sincere. A moment to listen to one another, to pause at what connects us and to discover new perspectives. A concert in which not only the artists, but also the audience becomes part of a community.

Ecstatic Dance is een vrije vorm van dans. Puur, simpel, en juist daardoor zo krachtig en transformerend. In de bijzondere setting van de Sint Janskerk nodigen L'Okapi en Musica Sacra je uit voor een collectieve ervaring van beweging, overgave en verbinding.

Onder begeleiding van DJ Ananya Samyt ontstaat een muzikale reis waarin je niet hoeft te presteren, te praten of iets te zijn. Alleen aanwezig zijn is genoeg. We verwelkomen je in een warme, open bedding waarin je vrij bent om jezelf te uiten op een manier die goed voelt in het moment.

Richtlijnen

Om samen een veilige en gedragen sfeer te creëren, hanteren we een paar belangrijke richtlijnen:

• Vanaf het moment dat je de zaal binnenkomt, spreken we niet meer met woorden. Tot de eindcirkel wordt er ook op de gang en op het toilet niet gesproken.

• We dansen op blote voeten, ieder op zijn of haar eigen unieke manier. Sokken of dansschoentjes zijn toegestaan.

• We komen zo puur mogelijk: dus geen alcohol, drugs of sterke parfums.

• Geen telefoons, camera's of andere afleiding tijdens de dans.

Ecstatic Dance is a free form of dance. Pure, simple, and powerful and transformative precisely because of it. In the special setting of the Sint Janskerk, L'Okapi and Musica Sacra invite you to a collective experience of movement, surrender and connection.

Guided by DJ Ananya Samyt, a musical journey unfolds in which you do not have to perform, speak or be anything. Simply being present is enough. We welcome you into a warm, open space where you are free to express yourself in whatever way feels right in the moment.

Guidelines

To create a safe and supportive atmosphere together, we follow a few important guidelines:

• From the moment you enter the hall, we no longer speak with words. Until the closing circle, there is also no talking in the hallway or restrooms.

• We dance barefoot, each in their own unique way. Socks or dance shoes are allowed.

• We arrive as pure as possible: no alcohol, drugs or strong perfumes.

• No phones, cameras or other distractions during the dance.

Muzikale leiding: Hendrik Vanden Abeele

De Duitse mystica Hildegard van Bingen (1098-1179) stond al in haar eigen tijd bekend om haar visies en visioenen. Ze correspondeerde met de groten der aarde en was daardoor een uitzonderlijk invloedrijke vrouw. Bovendien voorzag Hildegard haar eigen teksten van muziek. Dat levert een repertoire op dat sterk geworteld is in de gregoriaanse traditie, maar tegelijk opvalt door zijn grote toonomvang en uitgesproken poëtische kracht. In de combinatie van visioen, tekst en klank is ook een vorm van extase aanwezig: een gerichtheid voorbij het alledaagse, die in Hildegards muziek sterk waarneembaar wordt en die Psallentes in de uitvoering verder aanscherpt.

Vijfenzeventig gezangen zijn ons van Hildegard overgeleverd, met als belangrijkste bron de zogenoemde Dendermonde Codex, een twaalfde-eeuws handschrift dat vandaag in Leuven wordt bewaard. Uit dit handschrift kozen de zangeressen van Psallentes een reeks gezangen ter ere van de heilige Ursula. Met antifonen, waaronder O rubor sanguinis, responsoria, een sequentia en een hymne, het opzwepende Cum vox sanguinis, bouwen zij een krachtig klankbeeld op. Het resultaat is een intens muzikaal gebeuren, waarin eensgezind en met toenemend engagement de lotgevallen van Ursula en haar reisgezellinnen worden bezongen.

Volgens de legende was Ursula een koningsdochter die niet wilde trouwen voor ze een bedevaart naar Rome had gemaakt. Samen met de elfduizend maagden die haar vergezelden, werd ze, nog steeds volgens de legende, in de buurt van Keulen vermoord. Hildegard bezingt Ursula en haar gezellinnen niet als verre figuranten in een oud verhaal, maar als een groep sterke vrouwen die ook vandaag nog tot ons spreken.

Dit concert wordt ingericht door L'Okapi.

Musical direction: Hendrik Vanden Abeele

The German mystic Hildegard von Bingen (1098-1179) was known in her own time for her insights and visions. She corresponded with the great figures of her age and was, as a result, an exceptionally influential woman. Hildegard also set her own texts to music. This produced a repertoire deeply rooted in the Gregorian tradition, yet striking for its wide vocal range and outspoken poetic power. In the combination of vision, text and sound there is also a form of ecstasy: a reaching beyond the everyday that becomes strongly present in Hildegard's music and that Psallentes sharpens further in performance.

Seventy-five chants by Hildegard have come down to us, the most important source being the so-called Dendermonde Codex, a twelfth-century manuscript now kept in Leuven. From this manuscript, the singers of Psallentes chose a series of chants in honour of Saint Ursula. With antiphons, among them O rubor sanguinis, responsories, a sequence and a hymn, the rousing Cum vox sanguinis, they build a powerful soundscape. The result is an intense musical event in which the fortunes of Ursula and her travelling companions are sung with unity and growing engagement.

According to legend, Ursula was a king's daughter who did not want to marry before making a pilgrimage to Rome. Together with the eleven thousand virgins who accompanied her, she was, still according to legend, murdered near Cologne. Hildegard does not sing of Ursula and her companions as distant figures in an old story, but as a group of strong women who still speak to us today.

Sint Servaas Basiliek

In de tweede helft van de 6e eeuw liet bisschop Monulfus bij het graf van St. Servaas een eerste kerk bouwen, die in de 8e eeuw door bisschop Gondulfus werd vervangen door een nieuwe, driebeukige basilica. In die tijd is er ook voor het eerst sprake van een klooster. Wellicht nog einde 10e eeuw, maar in ieder geval begin 11e eeuw begon de bouw van opnieuw een volledig nieuwe kerk. Tussen ca. 1000 en en het midden van de 13e eeuw kreeg de huidige kerk zijn hoofdvorm in ruwweg drie bouwcampagnes. Belangrijk daarbij was de steun van de Duitse keizers, die duurde tot de overname van de keizerlijke rechten in 1204 door de Hertog van Brabant. De werkzaamheden kwamen tot stand onder supervisie van opeenvolgende proosten Geldulfus, Humbertus en Gerard van Are. De verbouwingen waren het gevolg van het groeiend belang van het gebouw als grafkerk en pelgrimskerk, maar ook van de functies als imperiale eigenkerk, kapittelkerk en parochiekerk (tot ca. 1200).
